Footnotes that change the numbers

  • Years of service. Columns are cumulative years of service as DFAS lists them. "2 or less" covers service up to and including 2 years; "Over 4" starts the day after your 4th anniversary and runs through 6 years, and so on. A dash means DFAS publishes no rate because that grade is not held at that length of service.
  • O-7 to O-10 cap. Basic pay for these grades is limited to Executive Schedule Level II, which is $18,999.90 a month in calendar year 2026. Cells at the cap are marked with an asterisk.
  • O-6 and below cap. Basic pay for O-6 and below is limited to Executive Schedule Level V, $15,408.30 a month. The O-6 cells at that amount are marked with an asterisk.
  • O-1E to O-3E. The regular O-1, O-2 and O-3 rates do not apply to officers credited with over 4 years of active service as an enlisted member, warrant officer or both, or with enlisted or warrant officer reserve service worth at least 1,460 retirement points (37 U.S.C. 203(d)). Those officers use the O-1E, O-2E and O-3E rows.
  • E-1 under 4 months. An E-1 with less than 4 months of active duty is paid $2,225.70 a month; the E-1 row applies after 4 months.
  • Senior enlisted advisors. An E-9 serving as Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Sergeant Major of the Army, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force or Space Force, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, or Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau is paid $11,166.90 a month regardless of years of service.
  • Cadets and midshipmen. Academy cadets and midshipmen and ROTC members and applicants are paid $1,452.90 a month.

How the 2026 raise compares with 2025

The 2026 raise was 3.8% for every grade. In 2025, basic pay rose 4.5% in January, and junior enlisted grades received an additional increase on April 1, 2025, which is why the table in effect at the end of 2025 already had higher E-1 to E-5 rates. For example, an E-5 with over 4 and up to 6 years was paid $3,802.20 a month at the end of 2025 and is paid $3,946.80 a month in 2026. An O-3 with over 4 and up to 6 years went from $7,112.40 to $7,382.70.

Every monthly rate in the table is a multiple of 30 cents: a daily rate in whole cents times 30. Pay for O-6 and below is also capped at Executive Schedule Level V, so the highest O-6 rates are held at $15,408.30.

Military pay chart questions

How much do E-1, E-5 and O-1 make in 2026?

Under the DFAS table effective January 1, 2026, an E-1 with 4 months or more of service is paid $2,407.20 a month. An E-5 with over 4 and up to 6 years of service is paid $3,946.80 a month, and an O-1 with 2 years or less is paid $4,150.20 a month. These are basic pay only; housing, food and special pays are separate.

What was the 2026 military pay raise?

Basic pay rose 3.8% across the board on January 1, 2026. Unlike 2025, there was no extra increase for junior enlisted grades.

How do I read the years-of-service columns?

DFAS columns are cumulative years of service. "Over 4" means more than 4 years and up to 6; the next column, "Over 6", starts the day after your 6th anniversary. "2 or less" covers the first two years.

Is the military pay chart the same for every branch?

Yes. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force and Coast Guard all use the same basic pay table by pay grade. Rank titles differ by branch; E-5 is a sergeant in the Army and a petty officer second class in the Navy.

Does basic pay include housing and food allowances?

No. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS), special and incentive pays and tax advantages are separate. The chart shows basic pay only.

When will the 2027 military pay chart come out?

DFAS posts the official table once the 2027 raise is settled, around the turn of the year; the 2026 tables went up in January 2026. Until then, see our 2027 military pay chart for the President's 7-6-5 tiered raise, which takes effect January 1 unless Congress sets a different raise, and the Senate committee's 3.6% version.
