Federal Holidays 2026

OPM lists 11 federal holidays for 2026, and ten of them fall on a weekday, so federal offices close on the calendar date. The exception is Independence Day: Saturday, July 4, 2026 is observed on Friday, July 3, 2026. New Year's Day 2027 is Friday, January 1, 2027 and belongs to the 2027 list. The table shows the calendar date, the day OPM treats as the holiday, the weekday of each and the NFC pay period it falls in.

Federal offices, USPS, the Federal Reserve, the stock and bond markets and the federal courts each keep their own holiday calendars, so a federal holiday is not always a day everything closes. The closure table lists each one with its source. For federal holidays 2026 and 2027 side by side, the 2027 list, with three weekend shifts, is on the federal holidays 2027 page.

Essential federal employees can be required to work, and agency heads decide which offices stay open. Federal courts are always open for filing papers under 28 U.S.C. 452, even when clerk's offices are closed.

How observed dates work

In 2026 only Independence Day is affected: it falls on Saturday, July 4, so federal offices close on Friday, July 3, 2026. Five U.S.C. 6103(a) names 11 legal public holidays. Under 6103(b), a holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before for employees on a Monday-through-Friday workweek, and under Executive Order 11582 (section 3(a)) a holiday that falls on a Sunday is observed on the following Monday. Employees on other schedules get the workday before a holiday that lands on a regular non-workday, and Inauguration Day (January 20 every fourth year, Washington, DC area) is a separate holiday that does not occur in 2026 or 2027.

Federal Reserve Banks are open on Friday, July 3, 2026 (the Board of Governors is closed), and USPS lists Saturday, July 4 as its holiday with Post Offices open on Friday, July 3.

The Federal Reserve does not follow the OPM Friday rule. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches stay open the Friday before, although the Board of Governors is closed that Friday. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday. Most commercial banks track the Reserve Banks but set their own branch hours.

Paid holiday rules for federal employees

Most federal employees are entitled to paid holiday time off when excused from duty on a designated holiday. A full-time employee on a standard schedule receives 8 hours; compressed schedules receive the hours of the basic workday, and a part-time employee is paid only for the hours regularly scheduled that day, up to 8. To be paid you must be in a pay or paid-leave status on the scheduled workday before or after the holiday.

An employee who works on a designated holiday is paid the basic rate plus holiday premium pay equal to the basic rate under 5 U.S.C. 5546(b), so double time for non-overtime holiday work. Overtime worked on a holiday is paid at overtime rates or given as compensatory time, and regularly scheduled night work still earns night pay.

Under OPM's pay rules, full-time employees, including those on flexible or compressed schedules, get an in-lieu-of holiday when a holiday falls on their regular day off; part-time employees do not. For example, if a Friday holiday lands on your scheduled day off, the holiday moves to your workday just before it (5 U.S.C. 6103(b)).

Plan leave around the holidays with the federal leave calculator. Military members follow DFAS dates, see military pay dates; VA benefits move on holidays too, see VA disability pay dates.
