VGLI Rates 2026: Monthly Premium Chart by Age and Calculator

VGLI (Veterans' Group Life Insurance) premiums depend on your age and your coverage amount, from $10,000 to $500,000. This page shows VA's full premium table dated July 1, 2025, a calculator with the discount VA gives for paying less often than monthly, the SGLI conversion rules, and how VGLI compares with SGLI.

VGLI rates chart by age and coverage

Monthly premium in dollars for every coverage amount VA lists. For example, $500,000 of coverage at ages 30 to 34 is $40.00 a month, and at 80 and older it is $2,200.00. Rates are the same for all genders and tobacco use, because VA bases them only on age and amount.

Paying quarterly, semi-annually or annually

VA's SGLI/VGLI Handbook says you can pay VGLI premiums in advance and members who pay other than monthly receive a discount. The calculator applies the rates the handbook lists to the monthly premium:

PaymentDiscountAges 30-34, $500,000
Monthly0.00%$40.00
Quarterly2.50%$117.00
Semi-annually3.75%$231.00
Annually5.00%$456.00

The last column matches the handbook's example for that age and amount. VA does not publish a rounding rule; this calculator rounds each payment to the nearest cent. Your OSGLI statement is the final word.

Converting from SGLI to VGLI: deadlines and increases

  • Apply within 1 year and 120 days of leaving the military. This is the outer limit VA gives on its VGLI page, and 38 CFR 9.2(c) repeats it.
  • No health questions within 240 days. OSGLI must receive both your application and your first premium within 240 days of leaving for you to skip proof of good health (VA handbook paras. 12.03(a)(1) and 12.05(b)). After 240 days, and until 1 year and 120 days, you must also submit evidence of good health (38 CFR 9.2(c)).
  • Effective date. If VA's office (OSGLI) receives your application and first premium within 120 days of separation, VGLI is effective the 121st day after separation (38 CFR 9.2(b)(1)). Special rules apply to the SGLI disability extension, the Individual Ready Reserve and the Inactive National Guard.
  • Amount. Up to the SGLI you had when you left, between $10,000 and $500,000. You cannot hold more than the SGLI maximum in SGLI and VGLI combined (38 U.S.C. 1977(a)(1)).
  • $25,000 increases. If you have less than the maximum, you can elect a $25,000 increase one year after getting VGLI and every five years after that, up to $500,000, not more than once in each five-year period and only while you are under 60 (38 U.S.C. 1977(a)(3)); VA's handbook (para. 12.01(f)) says under 60 on the effective date of the increase. Under 38 CFR 9.2(b)(5), a smaller increase is available only to reach the maximum, and you apply within 120 days of the invitation before the one-year anniversary or within 120 days before each later five-year anniversary. Increased coverage is effective from the anniversary date immediately following your election (38 CFR 9.2(b)(5)).

VGLI lasts as long as you pay. It is a renewable five-year term with no cash value, and it lapses if you stop paying (38 U.S.C. 1977(b)).

VGLI vs SGLI premium

VA's SGLI page lists a premium of 5 cents per $1,000 of coverage, so $500,000 costs $25.00 a month, plus a $1.00 monthly charge for Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI), which VGLI does not include. The same $500,000 in VGLI costs $40.00 at ages 30 to 34. Below, $250,000 of coverage by VGLI age band, against SGLI's $12.50 (before TSGLI):

75-79$962.50$12.5077.0x

SGLI has one rate for every age and is taken from pay while you serve; VGLI is priced by age band and you pay OSGLI directly. The figures compare price only, not features, and VGLI amounts that are not multiples of $50,000 have no matching row in VA's SGLI table, so the calculator applies the per-$1,000 rate.

VGLI premium holiday, 2026–2027

VA's holiday runs November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027. Eligible VGLI insureds do not pay premiums for November, December and January, and coverage continues under existing terms. After the last of those dates, regular premiums apply again. The calculator on this page shows regular premiums and does not subtract the holiday.

  • Who qualifies. Your VGLI coverage must be active on November 1, 2026. You do not qualify if you cancelled, or your coverage lapsed, on or before October 31, 2026.
  • Past-due premiums. The holiday does not erase them. VA says that failing to pay a past-due balance will lapse your coverage after the holiday ends.
  • New or reinstated coverage. You still pay the first premium. Coverage effective in November 2026 gets December and January; effective in December 2026 gets January only; effective on or after January 1, 2027 gets no holiday months.
  • Premiums you already paid. If you pay quarterly, semi-annually or annually and paid for holiday months, VA says the amount is credited automatically; depending on your billing cycle the credit may be spread over two bills.

VGLI questions

What are the current VGLI rates?

VA's VGLI premium tables are dated July 1, 2025. The monthly rate depends only on your age band and coverage amount, from $0.60 per $10,000 at 29 and younger to $44.00 per $10,000 at 80 and older. For $500,000, that is $30.00 a month at 29 and younger and $40.00 at ages 30 to 34.

How do I look up VGLI rates by age?

Find your age band in the chart on this page, then read across to your coverage amount. Each band is a flat price per $10,000, so you can also multiply: $250,000 is 25 times the band price per $10,000.

Does paying VGLI annually save money?

Yes. VA's SGLI/VGLI Handbook says members who pay other than monthly receive a discount: 2.50% for quarterly, 3.75% for semi-annual and 5.00% for annual payment. In VA's own example, a $480.00 yearly premium at ages 30 to 34 and $500,000 becomes $456.00 paid annually, saving $24.00.

How long do I have to convert SGLI to VGLI?

VA says to apply within 1 year and 120 days of leaving the military. If you apply within 240 days you do not have to prove you are in good health; after that you must submit evidence of good health. 38 CFR 9.2(b) and (c) say an application and first premium received within 120 days make coverage effective on the 121st day after separation.

How much VGLI can I get?

Up to the SGLI coverage you had when you left service, and never more than $500,000. If you took less than the maximum, 38 U.S.C. 1977(a)(3) lets you elect a $25,000 increase, not more than once in each five-year period starting at the one-year anniversary of your VGLI, while you are under 60 and your total stays within the SGLI maximum.

Does my VGLI rate go up as I get older?

VGLI is a renewable five-year term. VA's handbook says the rate for each new period is based on your age at renewal and the rate schedule in effect then, and the schedule can change. Check the age band for the age you will be at your next renewal.

Is VGLI more expensive than SGLI?

Per $10,000, yes at every age band VA lists. SGLI costs 5 cents per $1,000, or $0.50 per $10,000 a month, plus $1.00 a month for TSGLI. VGLI starts at $0.60 per $10,000 and rises with age. SGLI is also taken from active-duty pay and has no age bands; VGLI has no TSGLI charge.

Is there a VGLI premium holiday in 2026–2027?

Yes. VA's holiday runs November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027: eligible VGLI insureds do not pay premiums for those three months, and coverage continues. You qualify if your coverage is active on November 1, 2026; VA says you do not if you cancelled or your coverage lapsed on or before October 31, 2026. It does not erase a past-due balance, and VA says an unpaid balance will lapse your coverage after the holiday ends. New or reinstated policies still pay the first premium: coverage effective in November gets December and January, in December gets January only, and on or after January 1, 2027 gets none. If you already paid for holiday months, VA says the amount is credited automatically, and the credit may be spread over two bills. This page's calculator shows regular premiums, not the holiday.

Can I switch from VGLI to another policy?

VA says you can convert VGLI to an individual permanent policy, such as whole life, with a participating company at standard rates and without a medical exam. You cannot convert to term, variable or universal life. 38 U.S.C. 1977(e) gives the right to convert at any time.
