2027 pay periods (NFC numbering)

Dates match the USDA NFC Pay Period Calendar 2027 (Form NFC-1217). Pay dates are from NFC's online pay period calendar. In that 2027 calendar the direct deposit or paper check date is the Monday nine days after the period ends (Tuesday when that Monday is a federal holiday) and the official pay date is the Thursday twelve days after it ends. Pay periods 25 and 26 of the 2026 leave year are paid in January 2027; the first row is the second of them.

Pay dates by payroll provider

The two-week periods are the same everywhere; the numbers and pay dates are not. GSA numbers periods by the year of the official pay date (its 2027 pay period 1 ends January 9, 2027). IBC also numbers by the pay date year (its 2027-02 ends January 9, 2027). GSA dates are from its 2027 payroll calendar (through the period ending December 25, 2027); IBC's official pay date is the second Tuesday after the period ends, per IBC's published rule (IBC says some agencies are paid by direct deposit earlier, normally the first Friday).

GSA lists December 30, 2027 as both the official and EFT pay date of its last 2027 period (ends December 25). GSA's 2027 calendar lists the period ending January 8, 2028 (its 2028 pay period 1) but no pay dates for it yet. A Friday EFT date that falls on a federal holiday moves back to Thursday (June 17 and December 30).

Federal holidays 2027

OPM's 2027 holiday schedule under 5 U.S.C. 6103. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, most federal employees get the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday. There is no Inauguration Day in 2027.

How federal pay periods work

Most federal employees are paid biweekly: a pay period runs 14 days from a Sunday through a Saturday and is paid about 6 to 12 days later (direct deposit or the official pay date, depending on the provider). The leave year (5 CFR 630.201) begins with the first complete pay period in January, which for 2027 is the period starting January 10, 2027. That makes 2027 a 26-pay-period year, with the last period ending January 8, 2028. A leave year has 27 pay periods only when the cycle slips far enough to fit an extra one; by our calculation 2023 was the last and 2034 is the next.

January 1 through 9, 2027 belong to pay period 26 of the 2026 leave year, and the last period of 2027 runs into January 2028, so a paycheck dated in one calendar year can cover work in another. New Year's Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027, inside pay period 26.

Providers differ: NFC (USDA) pays direct deposit on a Monday and sets the official pay date on a Thursday; GSA lists a Wednesday official pay date; Interior's IBC uses the second Tuesday after the period ends. Check which payroll provider your agency uses, and use the GS pay calculator to turn your salary into a per-period amount. Military members are paid on the 1st and 15th; see military pay dates.

Federal pay period calendar questions

When does the first pay period of 2027 start?

Federal pay period 1 of 2027 starts on Sunday, January 10, 2027, and ends Saturday, January 23, 2027. This is the USDA National Finance Center (NFC) numbering, and GSA and the Interior Business Center use the same two-week periods. January 1 through 9, 2027 still belong to pay period 26 of the 2026 leave year (December 27, 2026 through January 9, 2027). GSA and IBC number that period differently, so check which number your payroll office uses.

How many pay periods are in 2027?

The 2027 leave year has 26 pay periods, from January 10, 2027 through January 8, 2028. GSA also lists 26 periods ending in 2027, and the Interior Business Center numbers 26 periods as 2027-01 through 2027-26. There is no 27-pay-period year in 2027. Under the OPM leave year definition (5 CFR 630.201), the leave years with 27 pay periods are 2023, 2034 and 2045 by our calculation. The 2026 leave year (January 11, 2026 through January 9, 2027, per NFC’s 2026 calendar) also has 26.

What are the federal holidays in 2027?

OPM lists these 2027 holidays with the day federal offices observe them: New Year’s Day (January 1, 2027); Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 18, 2027); Washington’s Birthday (February 15, 2027); Memorial Day (May 31, 2027); Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 18, 2027); Independence Day (July 5, 2027); Labor Day (September 6, 2027); Columbus Day (October 11, 2027); Veterans Day (November 11, 2027); Thanksgiving Day (November 25, 2027); Christmas Day (December 24, 2027). Juneteenth, Independence Day and Christmas Day fall on a weekend, so they are observed on the Friday before or the Monday after. New Year’s Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. There is no Inauguration Day holiday in 2027.

When is federal payday?

It depends on the payroll provider. Federal employees are paid every two weeks, about 6 to 12 days after a pay period ends depending on the provider and on whether you count direct deposit or the official pay date. In NFC’s (USDA) 2027 calendar, direct deposit is the Monday nine days after the period ends (Tuesday when that Monday is a federal holiday) and the official pay date is the Thursday twelve days after it ends. The first 2027 pay period (ends January 23, 2027) is paid by NFC on Thursday, February 4, 2027. GSA uses a Wednesday official pay date and IBC the second Tuesday after the period ends. Your agency’s payroll provider is authoritative.

Is there a 2027 pay raise in January?

Any general schedule raise normally takes effect in the first pay period that begins on or after January 1, which is pay period 1 in NFC numbering (GSA pay period 2, IBC 2027-03), starting January 10, 2027. As of October 23, 2026, the President’s alternative pay plan proposes holding GS base and locality pay at 2026 rates unless Congress or an executive order changes it. See the federal pay raise 2027 page for the current status and a calculator. Federal pay raise 2027.
