SSDI Payment Schedule 2026 and 2027

SSDI benefits are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month, set by the birth date of the person whose work record pays the benefit: the 1st-10th is the second Wednesday, the 11th-20th the third and the 21st-31st the fourth. Some people are paid on the 3rd instead, and a date that lands on a weekend or federal holiday moves earlier. This page lists every date for 2026 and 2027 and finds yours.

Wednesday, November 18, 2026: Birth date on the 11th-20th: third Wednesday, the November 2026 payment, which pays the benefit due for the month before.

The birthday is the insured worker's. If you get SSDI on your own record, that is yours; a spouse is paid by the spouse's birth date. Tick the 3rd-of-month box only if SSA tells you that is your day. Your award letter has the day SSA assigned.

Which SSDI payment day is yours

The rule in SSA's regulation, 20 CFR 404.1807(b)(2):

“Insured individuals born on the 1st through the 10th of the month will be paid on the second Wednesday of each month. Insured individuals born on the 11th through the 20th of the month will be paid on the third Wednesday of each month. Insured individuals born after the 20th of the month will be paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month. See paragraph (c) of this section for exceptions.”

20 CFR 404.1807(b)(2)

Whose birthday counts, in SSA's booklet for people who get disability benefits:

“Generally, the day on which you receive your benefits depends on the birth date of the person on whose work record you receive benefits. For example, if you receive disability or retirement benefits, your payment date will be determined by your birth date. If you receive benefits as a spouse, your benefit payment date will be determined by your spouse’s birth date.”

SSA Publication 05-10153, “When and how your benefits are paid”

The regulation also gives everyone paid on one earnings record the same day:

“We will assign the same payment day for all individuals who receive benefits on the earnings record of a particular insured individual.”

20 CFR 404.1807(b)(1)

When SSDI is paid on the 3rd

The 3rd-of-month group is an exception to the birthday rule. Paragraph (c) of the same regulation covers it, and SSA's printed calendar sums it up.

“If you or any other person became entitled to benefits on the earnings record of the insured individual based on an application filed before May 1, 1997, you will continue to receive your benefits on the 3rd day of the month (but see paragraph (c)(6) of this section).”

20 CFR 404.1807(c)(1)

“If you or any other person become entitled to benefits on the earnings record of the insured individual based on an application filed after April 30, 1997, and also become entitled to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits or have income which is deemed to an SSI beneficiary (per § 416.1160), all persons who are or become entitled to benefits on that earnings record will be assigned to the 3rd day of the month as the monthly payment day.”

20 CFR 404.1807(c)(2)

Paragraphs (c)(3) and (c)(4) add two more cases for applications filed after April 30, 1997: living in a foreign country, and not getting SSI but being eligible for the state to pay your Medicare premium.

For someone paid on more than one record, paragraph (c)(5) says:

“After April 30, 1997, all individuals who become entitled on one record and later entitled on another record, without a break in entitlement, will be paid all benefits to which they are entitled no later than their current payment day.”

20 CFR 404.1807(c)(5)

“If you received Social Security before May 1997 or if receiving both Social Security & SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.”

When a payment day is a weekend or holiday

“If the day regularly scheduled for the delivery of your benefit payment falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal legal holiday, you will be paid on the first preceding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal legal holiday.”

20 CFR 404.1807(c)(6)

Payments move earlier, never later. SSA's calendars treat the Friday that federal offices observe as a holiday as a non-payment day too, so the 3rd-of-month payment for July 2026 is Thursday, July 2. Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day, so the second-Wednesday group is paid on Tuesday, November 10.

SSDI is paid the month after it is due

“The benefits are paid in the month that follows the month for which they are due. For example, you would receive your July benefit in August.”

SSA Publication 05-10077, “When and how we pay your benefits”

SSA's Disability Benefits publication (05-10029) says the same about SSDI: it pays benefits in the month following the month for which they are due. The payment for a month pays the benefit for the month before; the January 2027 payment pays the December 2026 benefit, even when it is dated December 31, 2026.

SSDI and the 2027 COLA

“Social Security benefits will increase by 3.6 percent beginning with the December 2026 benefits, which are payable in January 2027.”

SSA, Latest COLA

Because of that month-after timing, the first higher SSDI payment is the January 2027 payment on your normal day:

  • Paid on the 3rd of the month: Thu, Dec 31, 2026 (January 3, 2027 is a Sunday, January 2 is a Saturday and January 1 is New Year’s Day, so it is paid on the last earlier business day, Thursday, December 31, 2026)
  • Birth date on the 1st-10th: second Wednesday: Wed, Jan 13
  • Birth date on the 11th-20th: third Wednesday: Wed, Jan 20
  • Birth date on the 21st-31st: fourth Wednesday: Wed, Jan 27

The 3rd-of-month date follows the weekend and holiday rule in 20 CFR 404.1807(c)(6), and SSA's 2026 calendar shows it. See the Social Security COLA 2027 page for the new amounts.

If your SSDI payment is late

“If you don’t receive your electronic payment on its due date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. They may experience a delay when your payment is posted. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, call us toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You can also contact your local Social Security office. We will review the case and if the payment is due, we will replace it.”

SSA Publication 05-10077

“If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.”

SSDI payment date questions

When is SSDI paid each month?

SSDI is paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on the birth date of the person whose earnings record pays the benefit (the 1st-10th, 11th-20th or 21st-31st). It is paid on the 3rd instead when an application on the record was filed before May 1997 or in the other 3rd-of-month cases in 20 CFR 404.1807(c). Your award letter and your my Social Security account show your assigned day.

Which birthday decides my SSDI payment date?

Generally, the birthday of the person whose work record you are paid on. If you get SSDI on your own record, that is your birthday. If you get benefits as a spouse, SSA says your payment date is determined by your spouse’s birth date, and the regulation gives everyone on one earnings record the same payment day.

Why is my SSDI paid on the 3rd?

Generally, SSA pays on the 3rd when you or anyone else on the record became entitled on an application filed before May 1, 1997, or when anyone on the record also gets SSI or has income deemed to an SSI recipient. The regulation adds two cases for later applications: living in a foreign country, and being eligible for the state to pay your Medicare premium. SSDI paid together with SSI arrives on the 3rd and the SSI on the 1st. Someone paid on one record who becomes entitled on another without a break is paid all benefits no later than their current payment day (404.1807(c)(5)).

Is SSDI paid in the month it is due?

No. SSA pays Social Security benefits, SSDI included, in the month after the month they are due: the July benefit arrives in August. That is why the January 2027 payment pays the December 2026 benefit.

When do I get the 2027 COLA on my SSDI?

SSA says the 3.6 percent increase starts with the December 2026 benefits, which are payable in January 2027. That is the January 2027 payment on your normal day: January 13, 2027 for birth dates on the 1st-10th, January 20, 2027 for the 11th-20th and January 27, 2027 for the 21st-31st. For the 3rd-of-month group the January payment is dated December 31, 2026: January 3, 2027 is a Sunday, January 2 is a Saturday and January 1 is New Year’s Day, so it is paid on the last earlier business day, Thursday, December 31, 2026, under 20 CFR 404.1807(c)(6).

What if my payment date is a weekend or holiday?

SSA pays on the first preceding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday or federal legal holiday, so a payment moves earlier and never later. In 2026 that moves the 1st-10th group in November to Tuesday, November 10, because Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day.

What should I do if my SSDI payment is late?

For a direct deposit, SSA says to contact your bank or financial institution first, because posting can be delayed. If you still need to report a late, missing or stolen payment, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local Social Security office. SSA reviews the case and replaces the payment if it is due.
