What this release measures
The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates job openings, hires, quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations across the U.S. labor market.
Job openings measure unfilled positions employers are actively recruiting for. Quits can help show worker confidence, while hires and layoffs reveal how quickly labor demand is changing.
Why the Federal Reserve watches it
JOLTS adds detail to the Fed’s maximum-employment assessment by showing labor demand and worker mobility, not just the net change in payroll jobs.
No single openings or quits estimate determines policy. JOLTS is released with a lag and can be revised, so policymakers compare it with payrolls, unemployment, wages, inflation, and other evidence.
How to read the schedule
- Every date and 10:00 AM ET publication time in the table comes from the official BLS 2026 release calendar.
- “Period covered” is the month measured by the survey, which is earlier than the publication month.
- This page tracks release timing and explains the report; it does not invent a consensus forecast or trading signal.
- BLS can revise release dates and estimates, so confirm the linked official calendar before a time-sensitive decision.
