Is Veterans Day a Federal Holiday? Yes, Nov. 11, 2026
Yes. Veterans Day is one of the 11 legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103(a), always on November 11. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, so there is no observed-day shift: federal offices and Federal Reserve Banks are closed and USPS does not deliver regular mail (USPS lists Nov. 11 as a holiday), while the NYSE and Nasdaq are open and SIFMA recommends a full bond market close.

The legal answer: Veterans Day is a legal public holiday
Federal law lists Veterans Day among the 11 legal public holidays and fixes it on November 11, so it does not move to a Monday. OPM lists Wednesday, November 11, 2026 on its federal holidays page.
The weekend rule is different. For most federal employees, a Saturday holiday is treated as a holiday on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after; OPM cites 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) for Saturday and Executive Order 11582 for Sunday. OPM’s wording is quoted below.
Separately, 36 U.S.C. 145 directs the President to issue a proclamation each year calling on the people of the United States to observe two minutes of silence on Veterans Day.
(a) The following are legal public holidays: New Year's Day, January 1. Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., the third Monday in January. Washington's Birthday, the third Monday in February. Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19. Independence Day, July 4. Labor Day, the first Monday in September. Columbus Day, the second Monday in October. Veterans Day, November 11. Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November. Christmas Day, December 25.
Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).
If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).) If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See Section 3(a) of Executive Order 11582, February 11, 1971.)

Veterans Day dates, 2026 to 2030
Veterans Day is November 11 every year. The table is computed from the calendar with the OPM weekend rule and matches OPM’s published tables for 2026 through 2030. November 11 falls on a Saturday in 2028 (observed Friday, November 10, 2028) and on a Sunday in 2029 (observed Monday, November 12, 2029). For a Saturday holiday the Federal Reserve Banks stay open the Friday before, unlike federal offices; the Sunday rule is the same as for federal employees, with the Banks closed the Monday after.

| Stock market (NYSE and Nasdaq) | Open | Stocks trade normally on Veterans Day: neither the NYSE nor the Nasdaq lists a Veterans Day closure in 2026. Check another day or institution: are banks open today, is the Post Office open today and is today a federal holiday.
Schools and private employers
Schools: federal law does not close schools. Districts and states decide their own calendars, so check your district calendar.
Private employers: the federal holiday law covers federal employees. The U.S. Department of Labor says this about holiday pay, and about government contracts:
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise). These benefits are generally a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee (or the employee's representative).
On a government contract to which the labor standards of the McNamara O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA) apply, holiday and/or vacation fringe benefit requirements are stated in the SCA wage determinations in contracts that exceed $2,500. On a government contract to which the labor standards of the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts apply, holiday pay and/or vacation pay is required for specific classifications of workers only if the Davis-Bacon wage determination in the covered contract specifies such requirements for workers employed in those classifications.
Federal employees: holiday pay and the observed day
Federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday schedule are off on a legal public holiday; when it falls on a weekend, the observed day is the one in the table above. An employee who has to work on the holiday is covered by 5 U.S.C. 5546(b), quoted below. Your agency and pay system decide how it applies, so ask your HR office.
(b) An employee who performs work on a holiday designated by Federal statute, Executive order, or with respect to an employee of the government of the District of Columbia, by order of the District of Columbia Council, is entitled to pay at the rate of his basic pay, plus premium pay at a rate equal to the rate of his basic pay, for that holiday work which is not— (1) in excess of 8 hours; or (2) overtime work as defined by section 5542(a) of this title.

Military and VA pay dates
Veterans Day does not move a military or VA payment in 2026 because November 11 is a Wednesday and not a payday. DFAS lists active duty paydays on Friday, October 30, 2026; Friday, November 13, 2026; Tuesday, December 1, 2026. VA deposits November disability compensation on Tuesday, December 1, 2026. Direct deposits follow the FedACH schedule: FedACH processing ends at 11:30 p.m. ET on November 10 and resumes at 5:30 p.m. ET on November 11 (Federal Reserve footnote: *Third file delivery begins at 8:15 p.m. ET).

Veterans Day vs. Memorial Day
VA says Veterans Day honors all who served honorably; Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, was originally set aside for remembering military personnel who died in service.
Veterans Day is intended to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military—living and dead—whether in wartime or peace.

Questions
Is Veterans Day a bank holiday?
Yes, for the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve Banks are closed on November 11, 2026 and FedACH does not process that day. Some bank branches close, but each bank sets its own hours, so check with your bank. TD Bank lists its stores as closed on Veterans Day 2026, and Chase lists Veterans Day among the holidays when its offices are generally closed.
Is mail delivered on Veterans Day?
USPS lists Wednesday, November 11 as Veterans Day on its 2026 holidays page. Post Offices close and regular mail is not delivered. In 2025 USPS said only Priority Mail Express was delivered and regular service resumed the next day; that is 2025 practice, so confirm 2026 details with USPS.
Is the stock market open on Veterans Day?
Yes. Stocks trade normally on Veterans Day: neither the NYSE nor the Nasdaq lists a Veterans Day closure in 2026. Trading is open at regular hours even though banks are closed, so moving cash in or out of a brokerage account waits for the banking system. The bond market is different: SIFMA recommends a full close on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for the U.S. bond market, with no early-close recommendation for that date.
Is there school on Veterans Day?
It depends on where you live. The federal holiday law covers federal employees; it does not set school calendars. Closures differ by district and state, so check your district calendar.
Do private employers have to give Veterans Day off?
Not under federal law for most private employers. Federal holidays bind federal employees, not private employers. The Department of Labor says: "The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise)." On government contracts the rules can differ, and DOL says: "On a government contract to which the labor standards of the McNamara O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA) apply, holiday and/or vacation fringe benefit requirements are stated in the SCA wage determinations in contracts that exceed $2,500." The Davis-Bacon and Related Acts can require holiday pay the same way, for specific classifications of workers and only if the wage determination specifies it. Check your employer and state law.
What happens when Veterans Day falls on a weekend?
For most federal employees, a Saturday Veterans Day is treated as a holiday on the Friday before and a Sunday Veterans Day on the Monday after (OPM, citing 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) and Executive Order 11582). The Federal Reserve Banks stay open the Friday before a Saturday holiday; the Sunday rule is the same as for federal employees, with the Banks closed the Monday after. November 11 is a Saturday in 2028 (observed Friday, November 10, 2028) and a Sunday in 2029 (observed Monday, November 12, 2029).
When is Veterans Day 2027?
Thursday, November 11, 2027. It is a Thursday, so there is no observed-day shift. The next year it falls on a weekend is 2028: Saturday, November 11, 2028, observed Friday, November 10, 2028 for most federal employees.
Do federal employees get extra pay for working on Veterans Day?
A covered employee who performs work on a holiday designated by Federal statute or Executive order is entitled to basic pay plus premium pay equal to basic pay, for holiday work that is not in excess of 8 hours and is not overtime work (5 U.S.C. 5546(b)). Your agency and pay system decide how it applies, so ask your HR office.
