What the G Fund rate means
The G Fund invests in special Treasury securities that pay a long-term interest rate but can be redeemed at face value on any business day. Your balance cannot fall in dollar terms; only the rate changes, once a month. It can still lose purchasing power: tsp.gov notes the G Fund may not grow enough to offset inflation. When the monthly rate goes up, your earnings accrue faster, and when it falls they accrue more slowly. TSP reports each month’s earnings as a monthly return.
The rate is an annual figure. TSP’s own monthly return usually matches the rate multiplied by the days in the month and divided by the days in the year; some months differ by about 0.01 percentage point. 4.875% over September 2026, for example, was a 0.40% monthly return.
Rate versus return. The G Fund rate is the interest rate for one month. A rate of return, such as the 1-year return of 4.51%, is what the fund actually earned over a longer period, so it blends many monthly rates. Use the rate when you want the current level (for example, to see what a TSP loan costs) and the return to see how the fund did.
How the G Fund rate is set
Congress set the formula in 5 U.S.C. 8438(e). Each month the Treasury computes the average market yield, from market quotations as of the end of the previous month, of all outstanding marketable Treasury securities that are not due or callable for at least 4 years, and the result is rounded to the nearest one-eighth of 1 percent. TSP’s fund sheet describes about 202 securities weighted by amount outstanding, with a weighted average maturity of about 13 years.
Because the formula follows long-term Treasury yields, the rate moves when those yields move, and it cannot be predicted precisely. This page does not publish forecasts; a month appears in the table only after TSP has published it.

Illustration, not a TSP figure. It compounds your balance daily at the annual rate you pick and adds each contribution at the end of the month. The G Fund rate changes every month, so a rate held for years will not match what you actually earn.

G Fund rate by month
Monthly G Fund rates and returns from December 2022 through September 2026. TSP does not publish a month-by-month rate table, so each rate was read from TSP’s “current loan interest rate” data as shown the month after (the loan rate is the previous month’s G Fund rate); the monthly return is TSP’s own figure. 31 of 46 months have a rate on record. For the other 15, we could not read an official value, so the table says so rather than estimating one. December 2022 is left blank because TSP’s own return for that month (0.32%) does not fit the 3.875% in the archived file. Each rate links to the TSP file it was read from, so you can check it yourself.

G Fund rate questions
What is the TSP G Fund rate?
The latest official G Fund rate is 4.875% for September 2026. The G Fund pays one interest rate for the whole month, and the U.S. Treasury resets it every month. The rate is an annual rate that TSP credits to your balance daily.
What is the current G Fund rate?
The most recent monthly rate TSP has published is 4.875% for September 2026. TSP shows it as the TSP loan interest rate, which equals the G Fund rate for the month before a loan is requested, so a new month's rate shows up there after the month begins.
What is the G Fund rate of return?
TSP reports the G Fund returned 4.51% over 1 year, 4.50% a year over 3 years and 3.97% a year over 5 years, as of September 2026. The calendar-year return was 4.44% for 2025. A rate of return covers a period; the G Fund rate is the annual interest rate for one month, so the two differ.
How is the G Fund interest rate set?
By law (5 U.S.C. 8438(e)(2)), the G Fund earns the average market yield of all outstanding marketable Treasury securities that are not due or callable for at least 4 years. The Treasury computes it from market quotations as of the end of the calendar month before the rate applies, and rounds it to the nearest one-eighth of 1 percent. TSP says the calculation weights about 202 securities by the amount outstanding.
Is the G Fund rate the same as the TSP loan rate?
Yes, with a one-month lag. tsp.gov says the TSP loan interest rate is the same as the G Fund interest rate for the month before you request the loan, and it stays the same for the life of the loan. tsp.gov showed 4.875% as the loan rate on October 24, 2026, which is the G Fund rate for September 2026.
Can the G Fund lose money?
Not in dollar terms. TSP says the value of G Fund securities does not fluctuate and your investment is redeemable any business day with no risk to principal; only the interest rate changes. But tsp.gov also warns that the G Fund may not grow enough to offset the loss of purchasing power from inflation, and it can earn less than stock funds in strong markets.
Can I predict next month’s G Fund rate?
Not precisely. The rate depends on Treasury yields at the end of the previous month, which no one knows in advance, so this page does not publish forecasts. Each month appears here only after TSP has published it.
