What this release measures

The Producer Price Index measures average changes in prices that domestic producers receive for their output. BLS publishes indexes for goods, services, and construction across multiple stages of production.

The monthly report includes headline measures and detailed categories. “Final demand” refers to goods, services, and construction sold for personal consumption, capital investment, government, and export.

Why the Federal Reserve watches it

PPI can reveal price pressure earlier in the production pipeline and helps policymakers assess whether inflation is broadening or easing before it reaches consumers.

PPI is not the Fed’s inflation target and does not translate one-for-one into CPI or PCE. Policymakers compare it with consumer inflation, wages, productivity, expectations, and demand.

How to read the schedule

  • Every date and 8:30 AM ET publication time in the table comes from the official BLS 2026 release calendar.
  • The table shows 13 publication dates because two different reference periods are scheduled in January 2026.
  • “Period covered” identifies the month whose producer prices are measured, not the publication month.
  • BLS can revise the schedule and the estimates, so confirm the linked official calendar before a time-sensitive decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the next PPI report?

As reviewed on September 2, 2026, the next Producer Price Index release is scheduled for Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 8:30 AM Eastern Time. It covers August 2026.

What time does PPI come out?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules the Producer Price Index release for 8:30 AM Eastern Time.

What does PPI measure?

PPI measures the average change over time in selling prices received by domestic producers. It covers goods, services, and construction at different stages of production.

Does PPI predict CPI or PCE inflation?

Not mechanically. Producer costs can affect consumer prices, but margins, productivity, imports, taxes, and demand can change how much passes through. The Fed evaluates PPI alongside CPI, PCE, wages, and inflation expectations.
