Is Today a Federal Holiday? Federal Holiday Checker

Federal holidays are the 11 legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103(a), and for most federal employees federal offices are closed on the observed day. The checker below uses your local time, shows today and tomorrow, and counts the days to the next federal holiday on OPM's list for 2026 and 2027.

“Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).”

What closes on a federal holiday

Federal offices are closed, for most federal employees, on the observed federal holiday. Other institutions keep their own calendars, so a federal holiday is not always a day everything closes. Use the checker for each one:

  • The Federal Reserve Banks keep their own holiday schedule: are banks open today.
  • USPS posts its own holiday list: is the Post Office open today.
  • The stock market follows the NYSE calendar, which has its own list: stock market holidays.
  • For the federal courts, Fed. R. Civ. P. 6(a)(6) lists the legal holidays used to compute time; check your court's orders for a closing day.

For one plain Thursday holiday all of them list the same day:

Federal holidays 2026 and 2027

These are the days federal offices observe, from OPM's list. When a holiday falls on a weekend, for most federal employees the observed day is the Friday before or the Monday after:

“If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).) If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See Section 3(a) of Executive Order 11582, February 11, 1971.)”

Days people ask about that are not federal holidays

None of these is one of the 11 legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103(a), and none is on the OPM list.

  • Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving): not on the OPM list. See is Black Friday a federal holiday.
  • Christmas Eve (December 24): not on the OPM list for 2026. Presidents have closed executive agencies on December 24 by executive order in some recent years (2018, 2019, 2020, 2024 and 2025); in 2027 OPM lists Friday, December 24 as the observed Christmas Day. See is Christmas Eve a federal holiday.
  • New Year's Eve (December 31): not on the OPM list for 2026. For 2027, OPM lists Friday, December 31, 2027 as the observed New Year's Day 2028.
  • Election Day: not on the OPM list. See is Election Day a federal holiday.

State and local government offices and private employers

The list on this page is the federal list: 5 U.S.C. 6103 provides the legal public holidays, and OPM's page lists them for Federal employees. It says nothing about state or local government offices or private employers, so check with them directly. The U.S. Department of Labor says this about private employers and government contractors:

“The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise). These benefits are generally a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee (or the employee's representative).”
U.S. Department of Labor: Holiday Pay
“On a government contract to which the labor standards of the McNamara O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA) apply, holiday and/or vacation fringe benefit requirements are stated in the SCA wage determinations in contracts that exceed $2,500. On a government contract to which the labor standards of the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts apply, holiday pay and/or vacation pay is required for specific classifications of workers only if the Davis-Bacon wage determination in the covered contract specifies such requirements for workers employed in those classifications.”

Frequently asked questions

Is today a federal holiday?

Use the checker at the top of this page. It reads the date in your browser, in your local time, and compares it with OPM's federal holiday list for 2026 and 2027, including the observed day when a holiday falls on a weekend.

Are government offices open today?

The checker answers this for federal offices: they are closed on an observed federal holiday, and an ordinary weekday that is not on the OPM list shows as not a federal holiday. OPM's page lists the holidays for Federal employees; it says nothing about state or local government offices or private employers, so check with them directly.

What are the 11 federal holidays?

5 U.S.C. 6103(a) names 11 legal public holidays: New Year's Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The 2026 and 2027 dates, with observed days, are in the table on this page.

What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?

OPM says: “If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).) If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See Section 3(a) of Executive Order 11582, February 11, 1971.)” Examples from OPM's lists: Independence Day (Saturday, July 4, 2026) is observed Friday, July 3, 2026, Juneteenth National Independence Day (Saturday, June 19, 2027) is observed Friday, June 18, 2027, Independence Day (Sunday, July 4, 2027) is observed Monday, July 5, 2027, Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25, 2027) is observed Friday, December 24, 2027, and New Year's Day (Saturday, January 1, 2028) is observed Friday, December 31, 2027.

Is the day after Thanksgiving a federal holiday?

No. 5 U.S.C. 6103(a) lists Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November, and no day after it, and OPM lists no federal holiday on Friday, November 27, 2026 or Friday, November 26, 2027.

Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday in 2026?

No. Christmas Eve is not one of the 11 legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103(a), and OPM's 2026 list shows only Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026. Presidents have closed executive agencies on December 24 by executive order in some recent years (2018, 2019, 2020, 2024 and 2025). When the federal holidays 2026 page was checked on October 25, 2026, no executive order or other official notice giving federal employees December 24, 2026 off had been found. In 2027, OPM lists Friday, December 24, 2027 as the observed Christmas Day.

Do federal employees get paid for federal holidays?

Pay for a holiday depends on the employee's schedule and pay rules; OPM's federal holidays and pay pages and the federal holidays 2026 page cover the details. For an employee who works on a holiday, 5 U.S.C. 5546(b) says: “(b) An employee who performs work on a holiday designated by Federal statute, Executive order, or with respect to an employee of the government of the District of Columbia, by order of the District of Columbia Council, is entitled to pay at the rate of his basic pay, plus premium pay at a rate equal to the rate of his basic pay, for that holiday work which is not— (1) in excess of 8 hours; or (2) overtime work as defined by section 5542(a) of this title.”

Is tomorrow a federal holiday?

The checker shows tomorrow beside today, using your local date. The date picker checks any day from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027, and a date outside OPM's lists on this page shows as not on this page.
