How the Saturday and Sunday rule works

The Federal Reserve gives the rule in the footnotes to its holiday table:

“For holidays falling on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday.”
Federal Reserve Financial Services, Holiday Schedules (footnote to the holiday table)
“For holidays falling on Sunday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be closed the following Monday.”
Federal Reserve Financial Services, Holiday Schedules (footnote to the holiday table)

The Board of Governors follows its own calendar on Saturday holidays:

“For holidays falling on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday; however, the Board of Governors will be closed. For holidays falling on Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices will be closed the following Monday.”
Federal Reserve Board, K.8 Holidays Observed by the Federal Reserve System 2026-2030
“* Saturday - the Federal Reserve Banks are open, but the Board of Governors is closed on July 3, 2026, June 18, 2027, December 24, 2027, December 31, 2027, and November 10, 2028.”
Federal Reserve Board, K.8 (footnote to the table)

In 2026 that is Independence Day: it falls on Saturday, July 4, and Federal Reserve Banks are open Friday, July 3. The stock market observes it on that Friday, so check the stock market holidays page too.
