401(k) contribution limit 2027: what is known now
The IRS sets next year's 401(k), IRA and SIMPLE limits each fall from inflation data. It announced the 2026 limits on November 13, 2025, so the 2027 limits are expected in the fall of 2026. This page will add them from the official IRS notice; until then, plan with the 2026 figures above.
The 2027 HSA limits are already final because the IRS publishes HSA amounts in the spring. If you are about to turn 65, check the Medicare rule below before setting your 2027 HSA contributions.
Rules that change your maximum
Age is measured on December 31. If you turn 50 at any point in the year, you can make the full catch-up that year. The higher 401(k) catch-up applies in the years you turn 60, 61, 62 and 63; at 64 it goes back to the regular catch-up.
The 401(k) limit is per person, not per plan. If you change jobs during the year, your deferrals at both employers count toward one limit. Use the "contributed so far" box to include them.
Medicare ends HSA contributions. Starting with the first month you are enrolled in Medicare, your HSA limit is zero, and retroactive Medicare coverage can make earlier contributions excess. Higher incomes in retirement can also raise your Medicare premiums; see our IRMAA brackets and calculator.
Contribution limit questions
What is the 401(k) contribution limit for 2026?
The 2026 employee contribution limit for 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457 plans and the Thrift Savings Plan is $24,500, up from $23,500 in 2025. Workers 50 and older can add a $8,000 catch-up, for $32,500 in total, and workers aged 60 to 63 can add $11,250 instead, according to IRS news release IR-2025-111.
What is the 401(k) contribution limit for 2027?
The IRS has not announced it yet. It announced the 2026 limits on November 13, 2025, so 2027 limits are expected in the fall of 2026. This page will add the official 2027 401(k) and IRA figures when the IRS publishes them; we do not publish projections.
What is the IRA contribution limit for 2026?
$7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older, since the IRA catch-up is now adjusted for inflation and is $1,100 for 2026. The limit applies to traditional and Roth IRAs combined.
What are the HSA contribution limits for 2027?
The IRS has already set them in Rev. Proc. 2026-24: $4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage, up from $4,400 and $8,750 in 2026. People 55 or older can add $1,000. A plan must have a deductible of at least $1,750 (self-only) or $3,500 (family) to qualify.
Can I contribute to an HSA after enrolling in Medicare?
No. IRS Publication 969 says your HSA contribution limit is zero beginning with the first month you are enrolled in Medicare, including retroactive coverage. You can still spend money already in the account on qualified expenses.
Does my employer match count toward the 401(k) limit?
No. The limit on this page is the employee elective deferral limit. Employer matching and profit-sharing contributions count toward a separate, higher overall limit on total additions to your account.
