How to read the VA pay chart

Start with your combined disability rating, not the individual ratings. If you have several conditions, the VA does not add them; see how the combined rating is worked out. Then pick the row that matches your dependents. The basic rate already covers the veteran, a spouse, parents and the first child under 18. Extra children and a spouse who needs aid and attendance are added on top.

A child between 18 and 23 who attends a VA-approved school is paid the school-child amount instead of the minor-child amount, so a school child never counts as the "first child" in the basic rate rows.

Example 1: 70%, spouse and one child

Use the 70% column, row 'With spouse and child'. The basic rate already includes the one child.

Basic rate, 70% with spouse, 1 child under 18

Monthly total

Per year
$24,893.40

Example 2: 50%, spouse, 3 children under 18 and 1 school child

Start at the 50% 'With spouse and child' rate, then add two more children under 18 and one school child.

Basic rate, 50% with spouse, 1 child under 18
$1,322.90
2 additional children under 18

1 child 18-23 in school
