The VA determines your rating and your actual payment. This page is general information, not legal or benefits advice. Amounts are VA's special monthly compensation rates; the calculator adds SMC-K and dependent amounts under 38 U.S.C. 1114(k) and 1115. VA decides which SMC level you qualify for. They do not include individual unemployability (TDIU), offsets for military retired or separation pay, or reductions for debts, hospitalization or incarceration. Reviewed October 18, 2026.

SMC level and SMC-K

SMC-K is $139.87 a month for each qualifying loss or loss of use, up to 3 awards on VA's page. VA does not add it to SMC-O/P, SMC-Q or SMC-R, so the box is turned off for those levels. Use the level on your VA decision letter; this page does not tell you which level applies.

Dependents

The first child under 18 is part of the table amount; each additional child under 18, each school child and a spouse needing aid and attendance are added per person. With SMC-K on a 0% to 100% rating, dependents follow that rating, so they count only at 30% and above.

How SMC-K and its caps work

Where K is added. VA adds SMC-K to a basic rating from 0% to 100% and to all SMC levels except SMC-O/P, SMC-Q and SMC-R. That includes SMC-S and the half-step rates. The statute (38 U.S.C. 1114(k)) pays it for each qualifying loss and does not set a number; VA's page says 1 to 3 awards, and this calculator uses that range.

Cap 1: schedular rating or SMC-S. Added to a rating under 1114(a) through (j) or to SMC-S under 1114(s), the total may not exceed the SMC-L rate. The U.S. Code still prints older dollar figures in 1114(k) because annual COLA acts raise the amounts without rewriting the section; the caps there equal the (l) and (o) rates of the same edition, so they move with the current SMC-L and SMC-O rates. In 2026 that is $4,900.83 for a veteran alone, so 100% ($3,938.58 alone) plus three awards is $4,358.19, which stays under it.

Cap 2: SMC-L through N. Added to SMC-L, M, N or an intermediate rate under 1114(p), the total may not exceed the SMC-O rate, $6,877.12. SMC-N 1/2 ($6,514.00) plus 3 awards would be $6,933.61, so it stops at $6,877.12.

Dependents are outside the caps. 38 CFR 3.350(a) says these limits do not prevent paying dependent amounts under 38 U.S.C. 1115 or the aid and attendance allowance under 1114(r). The calculator caps the veteran-alone amount and then adds dependents.

What each SMC letter covers

A plain-English summary of 38 U.S.C. 1114 (k) through (t), for orientation only. It is not a test of whether you qualify, and the statute and 38 CFR 3.350 have more detail and conditions.

SMC-K (38 U.S.C. 1114(k))
A flat amount for each anatomical loss or loss of use of one hand, one foot, both buttocks or a creative organ, blindness of one eye with only light perception, complete organic aphonia with constant inability to communicate by speech, or deafness of both ears with absence of air and bone conduction. For a woman veteran it also covers loss of 25 percent or more of tissue from a single breast or both breasts together, or radiation treatment of breast tissue. It is paid on top of the basic rate or on top of other SMC levels, within the caps explained below.
SMC-L (38 U.S.C. 1114(l))
Anatomical loss or loss of use of both feet, or of one hand and one foot; blindness in both eyes with 5/200 visual acuity or less; being permanently bedridden; or having disabilities that need regular aid and attendance.
SMC-M (38 U.S.C. 1114(m))
Anatomical loss or loss of use of both hands; of both legs with factors preventing natural knee action with prostheses in place; or of one arm and one leg with factors preventing natural elbow and knee action with prostheses in place. Also blindness in both eyes with only light perception, or blindness in both eyes that needs regular aid and attendance.
SMC-N (38 U.S.C. 1114(n))
Anatomical loss or loss of use of both arms with factors that prevent natural elbow action; anatomical loss of both legs, or of one arm and one leg, with factors that prevent the use of prosthetic appliances; anatomical loss of both eyes; or blindness without light perception in both eyes.
SMC-O and SMC-P (38 U.S.C. 1114(o) and (p))
SMC-O applies when conditions would qualify for two or more of the rates in subsections (l) through (n), with no condition counted twice, or for certain combinations of deafness and blindness, or anatomical loss of both arms with factors that prevent prosthetic use. Under subsection (p) VA may allow the next higher rate or an intermediate rate when disabilities exceed a rate’s requirements, and the statute lists cases where it must, such as loss or loss of use of three extremities. VA lists O and P in one column.
Half-step rates (L 1/2, M 1/2, N 1/2) (38 U.S.C. 1114(p))
These are intermediate rates. The statute sets each at the arithmetic mean of the two rates concerned, rounded down to the nearest dollar. (38 CFR 3.350(f) says "rounded to the nearest dollar"; VA's published 2025 and 2026 tables follow the statute and round down.)
SMC-R.1 and SMC-R.2 (38 U.S.C. 1114(r)(1) and (r)(2))
An aid and attendance allowance paid in addition to the SMC-O rate (at the maximum rate under (p), or the rate between N and O together with SMC-K) for a veteran who needs regular aid and attendance. R.2 replaces R.1 when the veteran also needs a higher level of care, meaning that without it hospitalization, nursing home care or other residential institutional care would be required.
SMC-S (38 U.S.C. 1114(s))
A single service-connected disability rated as total (100 percent) plus either additional service-connected disability or disabilities independently ratable at 60 percent or more, or being permanently housebound because of service-connected disability. A 100% combined rating built from several disabilities does not meet the first condition (38 CFR 3.350(i)).
SMC-T (38 U.S.C. 1114(t))
An aid and attendance allowance at the R.2 rate for a veteran who needs regular aid and attendance for residuals of traumatic brain injury, is not eligible under (r)(2), and would otherwise need hospitalization, nursing home care or other residential institutional care. VA lists R.2 and T in one column.
SMC-Q (38 U.S.C. 1114(q) (repealed))
A protected rate of $67.00 that VA has not awarded since August 19, 1968. If awarded, VA pays it in place of the basic rate.

SMC rates 2027 (estimate)

This is an estimate, not VA's published table. The 2027 Social Security COLA is 3.6%, and VA compensation is normally raised by the same percentage on December 1. If the increase takes effect December 1, 2026, the first payment at the new rate is scheduled for Thursday, December 31, 2026. The COLA bill (H.R. 8552 and S. 4487) had not passed as of our review date. We applied 3.6% to the 2026 veteran-alone rates and SMC-K, rounded each to the nearest cent, rebuilt the half-step rates as the average of the neighbors rounded down to the dollar, and took dependent amounts from our 2027 basic-rate estimate. The same steps reproduce every cell of VA's December 2024 and December 2025 SMC tables from the previous year's table.

VA SMC rates questions

What are the VA SMC rates for 2026?

For a veteran alone, the 2026 monthly SMC rates are $4,900.83 for SMC-L, $5,408.55 for SMC-M, $6,152.64 for SMC-N, $6,877.12 for SMC-O/P, $9,826.88 for SMC-R.1, $11,271.67 for SMC-R.2/T and $4,408.53 for SMC-S, with half-step rates between L, M, N and O. Each rate rises with a spouse, parents and children; the full chart is above. They took effect December 1, 2025.

What is the SMC-K rate in 2026?

SMC-K is $139.87 a month for each qualifying loss or loss of use. VA adds it to a basic rating from 0% to 100% and to every SMC level except SMC-O/P, SMC-Q and SMC-R, and its page says you may receive 1 to 3 awards.

Is there a cap on SMC-K?

Yes. Under 38 U.S.C. 1114(k), K added to a 0% to 100% rating or to SMC-S cannot take the total past the SMC-L rate ($4,900.83 alone in 2026), and K added to SMC-L through N, including half-steps, cannot take it past the SMC-O rate ($6,877.12). With 3 awards the second cap only bites at SMC-N 1/2: $6,514.00 plus 3 awards would be $6,933.61, so the veteran-alone amount stops at $6,877.12. Under 38 CFR 3.350(a) the caps do not limit dependent amounts.

How are the half-step SMC rates calculated?

Each is the average of the two rates on either side, rounded down to the whole dollar (38 U.S.C. 1114(p)). In 2026, SMC-L 1/2 is ($4,900.83 + $5,408.55) / 2, which is $5,154.00 after rounding down. Dependent amounts are added after that.

How much does a spouse or child add to SMC?

The same dependent amounts as at a 100% rating, at every level: $219.59 for a spouse, $176.24 for one parent and $146.85 for a first child under 18 with no spouse. Each additional child under 18 adds $109.11, each school child 18 to 23 adds $352.45, and a spouse who needs aid and attendance adds $201.41.

What will SMC rates be in 2027?

VA has not published them. Applying the 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment to the 2026 table, we estimate SMC-L at $5,077.26 and SMC-K at $144.91 for a veteran alone. The COLA bill (H.R. 8552 and S. 4487) had not passed as of our review date, so treat these as estimates.

Does this page tell me which SMC level I qualify for?

No. VA decides your level from your medical evidence. This page lists the rates, summarizes the statute and adds up the monthly amount for a level you already have. It is not legal or benefits advice.
