What this release measures
The Consumer Price Index measures the average change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of goods and services.
The report includes headline CPI and measures that exclude food and energy. Users commonly compare both the monthly change and the change from the same month one year earlier.
Why the Federal Reserve watches it
CPI arrives earlier than the monthly PCE report and provides a detailed, widely followed read on inflation. Interest-rate expectations can move when the result changes the perceived inflation path.
The Fed does not react mechanically to one CPI print. Policymakers also evaluate PCE inflation, wages, expectations, labor conditions, and whether price pressure is broad or concentrated.
How to read the schedule
- Every date and 8:30 AM ET publication time in the table comes from the official BLS 2026 release calendar.
- “Period covered” is the month whose prices are measured, normally one month before publication.
- This tool tracks scheduled publication dates and does not publish unsourced forecasts or market consensus numbers.
- BLS may revise release dates; verify the official calendar before a time-sensitive decision.
