TSP Rates of Return

Official TSP returns for every fund, through September 2026. Below: year-to-date and 1, 3, 5 and 10-year average returns for the G, F, C, S and I Funds and all L Funds, annual returns by year, every monthly return, each fund’s best and worst year, and a helper that shows how a lump sum would have grown between two months. The returns are TSP’s published figures. For the price behind them, see TSP share price history; for the G Fund’s monthly rate, see the G Fund rate; to project a balance, use the TSP calculator.

TSP fund performance through September 2026

Returns for every TSP fund as published by TSP. The 1, 3, 5 and 10-year and since-inception columns are average annual returns ending September 2026; a blank means the fund has not existed that long. Returns are net of fund expenses.

TSP annual returns by year

Calendar-year returns for every fund, newest first, as published by TSP. A dash means TSP publishes no full-year figure: the fund had not launched yet, or it launched partway through that year. The first row is the current year to date, through September 2026.

Growth of $10,000 between two months

See what a lump sum would have grown to in a TSP fund, from the start of one month through the end of another. The result is computed from TSP’s monthly returns; TSP does not publish it. It ignores contributions and withdrawals.

$

$10,000 in the C Fund, October 2016 through September 2026 (120 months), computed from TSP’s monthly returns

$41,528

Total return 315.28%, 15.30% a year compounded. Cross-check: TSP’s share price changed 315.23% over the same months.

Monthly returns run through September 2026. Small differences from the share price change come from TSP rounding monthly returns to two decimals.

How to read TSP returns

TSP returns are net of expenses and come from changes in each fund’s share price, so they describe the fund, not your account (in effect a time-weighted return, our description rather than TSP’s wording). Your own result depends on when you contributed and which funds you held. The G Fund began in 1987, the F and C Funds in 1988, the S and I Funds in 2001, and the L Funds from 2005 onward, which is why older years are blank for the newer funds. An L Fund’s return reflects TSP’s shifting mix of the five individual funds.

A single strong or weak year says little about the next one. Compare longer averages, and look at the worst year as well as the best to see the range of outcomes a fund can produce. To see the dollar prices behind the returns, use TSP share price history.

TSP rates of return questions

How are TSP rates of return calculated?

TSP’s returns are net of expenses: TSP says its share prices are calculated net of accrued administrative expenses, and its expenses and fees page lists the costs involved. Because the returns come from changes in a fund’s daily share price, they do not depend on when any one person contributes or withdraws; in effect a time-weighted return (that description is ours, not TSP’s wording). Annual and multi-year numbers are published by TSP; this page shows them unmodified.

What do the 1, 3, 5 and 10-year and since-inception numbers mean?

They are average annual returns, compounded, for the stretch ending at the latest month shown on this page. “Since inception” runs from the date TSP lists for each fund, which is why newer funds such as the later L Funds have fewer periods filled in. A multi-year average smooths out good and bad years, so it can look very different from a single year’s return.

Do past TSP returns predict future returns?

No. A fund’s past return does not predict what it will earn next, and the best fund in one stretch is often not the best in the next. Stock funds (C, S and I) swing widely from year to year, while the G Fund moves in a narrow band. Use returns to understand how each fund has behaved, and choose a mix based on your time horizon and tolerance for losses.

How does the G Fund compare with the other TSP funds?

The G Fund invests in special Treasury securities and has never had a negative year, but its returns are lower over long periods than the stock funds. Compare its annual and since-inception figures with the C, S and I Funds in the tables above; the difference is the price of avoiding losses. For the G Fund’s current monthly rate, see the G Fund rate page.

Where does the data on this page come from?

Every annual, monthly, year-to-date and multi-year return comes from the returns file that powers the rates-of-return page on tsp.gov, shown unmodified. The only numbers we calculate are in the growth-of-$10,000 helper, which compounds TSP’s monthly returns and is labelled as computed. We cross-check that math against TSP share prices. For anything that matters, confirm on tsp.gov or in My Account.

When do TSP rates of return update?

TSP publishes the previous month’s returns after each month ends. This page is not live: it shows the returns in the file it was last refreshed from, and the “through” month above the tables is taken from that file. Check tsp.gov for anything newer.

Why can the growth helper differ from my own TSP balance?

The helper assumes one lump sum is invested at the start of the first month and left alone through the end of the last month. Your account has contributions, loans and withdrawals at different times, so its dollar change will differ even though the funds’ returns are the same.

Not financial advice. This page is general information and is not affiliated with TSP or the FRTIB. Past returns do not predict future results. TSP is the authority for its returns; confirm figures on tsp.gov or in My Account before you rely on them.
