W-5 rank titles by branch
Rank is not pay grade: pay grades such as E-5 are administrative classifications used mainly to standardize compensation across the services.
Warrant officers hold warrants from their service secretary and are specialists and experts in certain military technologies or capabilities. There are no warrant officers in the Air Force.
Chief warrant officers are commissioned by the president, direct representatives of the president, and remain specialists, in contrast to commissioned officers, who are generalists.
