Green Card Renewal With Form I-90: Window, Fee and Receipt Notice

Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, is the USCIS form for green card renewal, and it costs $465 on paper and $415 when it is filed online (Form G-1055, edition 10/26/26). USCIS lists a card that is expired or will expire within the next six months as a reason to replace it, and conditional residents removing conditions file Form I-751 or I-829 instead. The no-fee cases and the waiver rule are on the green card renewal fee page. See also the EAD card page and the O-1 visa page.

Instructions for Form I-90 (edition 01/20/25), What Is the Purpose of Form I-90?

The USCIS Replace Your Green Card page says, for a conditional permanent resident whose card is expiring:

“If you are a conditional permanent resident and your Green Card is expiring, you must submit Form I-751, Petition to Remove the Conditions on Residence, to apply to remove the conditions on your permanent resident status.”

When to file: the six-month window, as USCIS states it

The USCIS Replace Your Green Card page lists the reasons to replace a card, and the first reason for a lawful permanent resident is the six-month one:

“If you are a lawful permanent resident, you must replace your Green Card if: Your Green Card is either expired or will expire within the next six months; […]”
uscis.gov, Replace Your Green Card page (Last Reviewed/Updated 09/12/2025)

The Instructions for Form I-90 describe the same reason as Item Number 2.f.:

“Item Number 2.f. My existing card has already expired or will expire within six months. Select this reason if your card will expire in the next six months or if your card has already expired. If you use this reason, and your existing card will not expire within six months, your application may be denied.”
Instructions for Form I-90 (edition 01/20/25), Item Number 2.f.

The Replace Your Green Card page also has a paragraph for a person outside the United States whose card will expire within six months; USCIS's page is authoritative for that case.

The same page names the form:

“you may begin the application process for a replacement Green Card by filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, online or by mail.”

Online or by mail

“You have 2 options for filing your Form I-90 application with USCIS: Online; or By mail (paper).”

The biometrics appointment

“Biometric Services Appointment. USCIS may require you to appear for an interview or provide biometrics (fingerprints, photograph, and/or signature) at any time to verify your identity, obtain additional information, and conduct background and security checks, including a check of criminal history records maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), before making a decision on your application or petition. If we determine that a biometric services appointment is necessary, we will send you an appointment notice with the date, time, and location of your appointment. If you are currently overseas, your notice will instruct you to contact a U.S. Embassy, U.S. Consulate, or USCIS office outside the United States to schedule an appointment.”
Instructions for Form I-90 (edition 01/20/25), Biometric Services Appointment
“If you do not attend your biometric services appointment, We may deny your application.”
Instructions for Form I-90 (edition 01/20/25)

The I-90 entry in Form G-1055 (edition 10/26/26) does not show a separate biometric services fee. The receipt notice wording quoted in the next section says what the notice does and does not cover about the appointment.

The receipt notice and proof of status

“If you are applying to renew your Green Card, your Form I-90 receipt notice can be used with your expired Green Card as evidence of your lawful permanent resident status and will say the following:”
uscis.gov, Replace Your Green Card page (Last Reviewed/Updated 09/12/2025)
“This notice, together with your Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (also known as the Green Card), provides evidence of your lawful permanent resident status for 36 months from the expiration date on your Permanent Resident Card. You remain authorized to work and travel. This notice, presented with your expired Permanent Resident Card, is evidence of your status and work authorization.”
uscis.gov, Replace Your Green Card page (Last Reviewed/Updated 09/12/2025)
“This notice does NOT serve as notification of your biometrics appointment.”

“If we determine you must submit biometrics, we will mail you a biometrics appointment notice with the time and place of your appointment.”

The 36-month wording is on the Replace Your Green Card page, which carried Last Reviewed/Updated 09/12/2025 when we checked on November 2, 2026. The uscis.gov Form I-90 page (Last Reviewed/Updated 10/07/2026) and the Instructions for Form I-90 (edition 01/20/25) do not state a validity period for the receipt notice. The saved sources include no document that dates when the 36-month wording began, so this page gives only the review date of the page that carries it.

The uscis.gov Form I-90 page also says:

“As a lawful permanent resident, you must have a valid, unexpired Green Card or equivalent documentation with you at all times. Applying for naturalization does not change this requirement.”
uscis.gov/i-90, Form I-90 page (Last Reviewed/Updated 10/07/2026)

8 CFR 274a.12(a)(1), on lawful permanent residents and employment, says:

“An expiration date on the Form I-551 reflects only that the card must be renewed, not that the bearer's work authorization has expired;”
