Substitute days: the rule, in the source’s words

Under the Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (version as at 9 October 2026), and as the official sources word it:

“When New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day fall on a weekend the public holiday is held on the following Monday (or Tuesday in some cases): if 25 December is a on a Saturday, then both the Saturday and the Monday following are holidays. if 25 December falls on a Sunday, then both the Sunday and the Tuesday following are holidays. If Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, then Monday is the public holiday. if Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, then Tuesday is the public holiday.”

“When Anzac Day falls on Saturday or Sunday, no substitute or additional holiday is observed.”

Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas), section 4(ia) to (j)

Regional holidays: part of Tasmania only

The table lists each regional holiday with the areas WorkSafe Tasmania gives for it. None of them applies across the whole state.

“The days specified in column 1 of Part 1 of Schedule 1 are statutory holidays to be observed as public holidays for the full day in respect of the occasions specified in column 2 of that Part for the areas of the State specified in column 3 of that Part.”
Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas), section 5(1)
“Listing a day as a public holiday does not automatically mean employees can have the day off work or get paid more for working on that day.”

Easter Sunday and Easter Tuesday

The Statutory Holidays Act 2000 lists Easter Sunday, but WorkSafe Tasmania’s table of statewide holidays and the Fair Work Ombudsman’s 2027 list do not, so the table shows the Act’s day with the date computed from Easter. Easter Tuesday is listed by WorkSafe Tasmania as generally Tasmanian Public Service only.

“(d) Good Friday; (da) Easter Sunday; (e) Easter Monday;”
Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas), section 4(d) to (e)
“(1) This section applies to a person who is a member of a class of persons referred to in section 6 of the Industrial Relations (Commonwealth Powers) Act 2009. (2) A person to whom this section applies is entitled, without loss of pay, to the following: (a) a holiday on Easter Tuesday;”
