Substitute days: the rule, in the source’s words
Under the Public Holidays Act 2023 (version as at 28 March 2024), and as the official sources word it:
“(2) If Christmas Day or New Year's Day falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the following Monday will be a public holiday in addition to that day. (3) If Proclamation Day holiday falls on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, the following rules apply: (a) where it falls on a Saturday, the following Monday will be a public holiday in addition to that day; (b) where it falls on a Sunday or a Monday, the following Tuesday will be a public holiday in addition to that day. (4) If Australia Day falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the following Monday will be a public holiday instead of that day.”
“25 April is a public holiday regardless of what day of the week it falls. There is no substitute or additional public holiday when 25 April falls on a Saturday or Sunday.”
The Act: the Public Holidays Act 2023 replaced the Holidays Act 1910
“Public and bank holidays in South Australia are prescribed by the Public Holidays Act 2023 […] This Act commenced on 1 January 2024 and replaces the Holidays Act 1910.”
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: part-day holidays
“The part of the day from 7pm to 12 o'clock midnight on the following days will be a public holiday (a part-day public holiday): (a) 24 December (Christmas Eve); (b) 31 December (New Year's Eve).”
“A person who works between the hours of 7pm and 12 midnight on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve is entitled to the public holiday rates provided by the relevant Award or Enterprise Agreement. This is still the case when those days fall on a Saturday or a Sunday.”
Bank holidays
“All public holidays and Sundays are taken to be bank holidays. All ADIs (authorised deposit-taking institutions) must be closed on bank holidays.”
