Substitute days: the rule, in the source’s words
Under the Holidays Act 1983 (version as at 15 September 2022), and as the official sources word it:
“From Christmas Day 2011, the Holidays Act 1983 provides for an extra public holiday to be added when Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day falls on a weekend.”
“27 December A public holiday is to be observed on 27 December only if 25 December is a Saturday or Sunday. 28 December A public holiday is to be observed on 28 December only if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday.”
“Anzac Day public holiday is to be observed on 25 April each year or, if 25 April is a Sunday, it shall be observed on the following Monday.”
Royal Queensland Show: Brisbane area only
The Queensland Government’s page lists the Royal Queensland Show holiday for the Brisbane area only.
“The Royal National Agricultural (RNA) Show Day (Brisbane only) is held on the Wednesday during the RNA Show period. The RNA Show commences on the first Friday in August, unless the first Friday is prior to 5 August, then it commences on the second Friday of August.”
Other show holidays
The Queensland Government’s show holiday page lists 97 show holiday dates for 2027. Each is listed against a named district and event, so a show holiday applies in the district named and not across the whole state.
“Public holidays for annual agricultural, horticultural and industrial shows are appointed each year.”
Christmas Eve: part of the day, and only for certain purposes
“(3) A public holiday is to be observed for the part of the day on 24 December (Christmas Eve) from 6p.m. to midnight. (4) However, subsection (3) applies only for working out a person’s entitlements under— […] (a) the Industrial Relations Act 2016 or an industrial instrument within the meaning of that Act; or (b) the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cwlth) or a federal industrial instrument; or (c) the Building and Construction Industry (Portable Long Service Leave) Act 1991; or (d) the Contract Cleaning Industry (Portable Long Service Leave) Act 2005.”
Labour Day and the King’s Birthday
“Labour Day public holiday is to be observed on the first Monday in May and the Birthday of the Sovereign (King’s Birthday) public holiday is to be observed on the first Monday in October.”
