Is it a bank holiday today? UK checker for today, tomorrow and the next one

Choose England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland: the checker works out in your browser whether today and tomorrow are bank holidays in that region, and shows the next one, using GOV.UK's dates.

How the checker works

  • The date is worked out in the Europe/London time zone from your device's clock. The page itself carries no date, so it cannot go out of date.
  • It compares that date with GOV.UK's bank holidays data for 2026 to 2028, region by region. Outside those years it gives no answer.
  • "Not a bank holiday" means GOV.UK does not list the date for that region. Substitute days are shown as GOV.UK marks them.
  • It does not include local holidays, and it says nothing about shop, branch or office opening hours.

GOV.UK explains weekends and pay like this:

“If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday.”
GOV.UK, UK bank holidays (gov.uk/bank-holidays), retrieved 4 November 2026
“Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays.”

Frequently asked questions

Is it a bank holiday today?

The checker answers in your browser: it works out the date in Europe/London, picks the region you choose and compares the date with GOV.UK’s bank holidays data for 2026 to 2028. A date that GOV.UK does not list is shown as not a bank holiday for that region.

Is tomorrow a bank holiday?

The checker shows tomorrow beside today, using the same GOV.UK data and the same region. It also shows the next bank holiday after today and the number of days until it.

Do England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have the same bank holidays?

No. GOV.UK publishes a separate list for each of the three, for example St Andrew’s Day in Scotland and St Patrick’s Day in Northern Ireland, which are not in the England and Wales list.

What happens when a bank holiday falls on a weekend?

GOV.UK says: “If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday.” The checker shows these as substitute day entries, as GOV.UK marks them.

Does a bank holiday mean everything is closed?

GOV.UK says: “Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays.” Its bank holidays page and data do not state shop, branch or office opening hours, so the business’s own information is the place to check. For Royal Mail, its Service Update page carries the daily details.

Does the checker include local holidays?

No. It uses GOV.UK’s bank holidays lists only. Royal Mail’s Service Update page, as archived on 3 November 2026, lists Scottish local holidays by postcode area in its own table; those are Royal Mail service rows, not GOV.UK bank holidays.
