How to Get an IRS Tax Transcript

The IRS wording behind the table
The IRS get-transcript page says:
“You can access your personal tax records online or by mail, including transcripts of past tax returns, tax account information, wage and income statements, and verification of non-filing letters.”
Online, in your Individual Online Account:
“You may register to use Individual Online Account to view, print, or download all transcript types listed below.”
“We recommend getting a transcript online since that’s the fastest method. If you’re unable to register, you can get a tax return or tax account transcript mailed to you instead.”
By mail or by phone, per the IRS transcript types page:
“If you're unable to register, or you prefer not to use Individual Online Account, you may order a tax return transcript and/or a tax account transcript through Get transcript by mail or by calling the automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946. Please allow 5 to 10 calendar days for delivery.”
“To get a transcript mailed to you, you need your mailing address from your latest return.”
With a form, per the same page:
“You may also request any transcript type listed below by submitting Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.”
Form 4506-T (April 2025) gives its own time frames, which it words in business days and which apply per transcript type. For the tax return transcript it says:
“Return transcripts are available for the current year and returns processed during the prior 3 processing years. Most requests will be processed within 10 business days”
Three details the IRS gives about where transcripts are sent:
“Note: Effective July 2019, the IRS will mail tax transcript requests only to your address of record.”
“For security reasons, the IRS does not fax transcripts.
The IRS also does not mail transcripts to third parties when Form 4506-T is submitted.”
“Don't use your old address as the transcript won't get forwarded to you. You need to file Form 8822, Change of Address, before you submit Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. Generally, it takes four to six weeks to process a change of address.”
Form 4506-T (April 2025) has no fee line, unlike Form 4506; the Transcript types for individuals and ways to order them page (page last reviewed March 10, 2026) says the transcript types it lists are offered “at no charge”.
Transcript types and what the IRS says each shows
Per the IRS transcript types page:
“We offer the following transcript types at no charge:”
| Transcript type | Shows | Years available |
|---|---|---|
| Tax return transcript | shows most line items from your original Form 1040-series tax return as filed, along with any forms and schedules. It doesn't show changes made after you filed your original return. | This transcript is available for the current and three prior tax years. |
| Tax account transcript | shows basic data such as filing status, taxable income, and payment types. It also shows changes made after you filed your original return. | Generally, this transcript is available for the current and nine prior tax years through Individual Online Account, and the current and three prior tax years through Get transcript by mail or by calling 800-908-9946. |
| Record of account transcript | combines the tax return and tax account transcripts […] into one complete transcript. | This transcript is available for the current and three prior tax years. |
| Wage and income transcript | shows data from information returns we receive such as Forms W-2, 1098, 1099, and 5498. | This transcript is available for the current and nine prior tax years. |
| Verification of non-filing letter | states that the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040-series tax return as of the date of the request. | This letter is available after June 15 for the current tax year or anytime for the prior three tax years. |
The IRS adds these conditions for the tax account, wage and income and non-filing types:
“Generally, this transcript is available for the current and nine prior tax years through Individual Online Account, and the current and three prior tax years through Get transcript by mail or by calling 800-908-9946. These years and older tax years can be obtained by submitting Form 4506-T. Please note, availability of these transcripts may be limited when certain conditions apply.”
“The transcript will only display information return documents that have been filed with the IRS which may not reflect all the information return documents issued to you. The transcript is limited to approximately 85 income documents. If you have more documents than that, the transcript will not generate when using Individual Online Account. You’ll receive a notification online stating that your transcript request could not be processed and to submit Form 4506-T.”
“Information for the current processing year will generally be available in the first week in February.”
“It doesn't indicate whether you are required to file a return for that year. This letter is available after June 15 for the current tax year or anytime for the prior three tax years. Use Form 4506-T if you need a letter for older tax years.”
Form 4506-T (April 2025) words the wage and income years differently from the transcript types page:
“The IRS may be able to provide this transcript information for up to 10 years. Information for the current year is generally not available until the year after it is filed with the IRS.”
On what appears on a transcript, the IRS get-transcript page says:
“Note: Transcripts partially mask your personally identifiable information to protect you. Financial data will remain fully visible to allow for tax preparation, tax representation or income verification.”
When a current-year transcript is available
“Use the table below to determine the general timeframe when you can request a transcript for a current year Form 1040 return filed on or before the April due date. Availability varies based on the method you used to file your return and whether you have a refund or balance due.”

The IRS transcript types page says:

Form 4506 (April 2025) and the IRS page about it say:

Designate a third party to receive the tax return.”
“There is a $30 fee for each return requested. Full payment must be included with your request or it will be rejected.”

“Copies of Forms 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ are generally available for 7 years from filing before they are destroyed by law. Other returns may be available for a longer period of time.”
The same set covers amended returns and Form 1040-X and the IRS IP PIN.
