Is the Day After Christmas a Federal Holiday? No — Dec. 26
No, the day after Christmas is not a federal holiday: 5 U.S.C. 6103(a) lists 11 legal public holidays and the day after Christmas is not one of them. The law: what 5 U.S.C. 6103(a) says about the day after Christmas
5 U.S.C. 6103(a), quoted below, lists the legal public holidays. There are 11, and the day after Christmas is not one of them. OPM's federal holidays tables for 2026 through 2030 have no row for the day after Christmas either.
(a) The following are legal public holidays: New Year's Day, January 1. Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., the third Monday in January. Washington's Birthday, the third Monday in February. Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19. Independence Day, July 4. Labor Day, the first Monday in September. Columbus Day, the second Monday in October. Veterans Day, November 11. Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November. Christmas Day, December 25.
Executive orders, not 6103(a), have closed executive departments and agencies on December 26 in some years. Two of them are quoted below, including their Section 3 on pay and leave; the table in the section on executive orders lists all five we found.
Section 1. All executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Friday, December 26, 2014, the day after Christmas Day, except as provided in section 2 of this order. Sec. 2. The heads of executive branch departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 26, 2014, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need. Sec. 3. Friday, December 26, 2014, shall be considered as falling within the scope of Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971, and of 5 U.S.C. 5546 and 6103(b) and other similar statutes insofar as they relate to the pay and leave of employees of the United States.
Section 1. All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, and Friday, December 26, 2025, the day before and the day following Christmas Day, respectively. Sec. 2. The heads of executive departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2025, or December 26, 2025, or both, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need. Sec. 3. December 24, 2025, and December 26, 2025, shall be considered as falling within the scope of Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971, and of 5 U.S.C. 5546 and 6103(b) and other similar statutes insofar as they relate to the pay and leave of employees of the United States.

Who gets the day off on the day after Christmas 2026
The day after Christmas is not in 6103(a), so by statute it does not change a federal employee's holiday schedule on Saturday, December 26, 2026. The table shows what the Federal Reserve, USPS, NYSE and SIFMA lists say for Saturday, December 26, 2026; each row names its source. Executive orders have closed agencies on December 26 in some years; see the section on executive orders.
OPM's rule for a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday, quoted below, applies to legal public holidays. The day after Christmas is not in 6103(a) or in OPM's tables, so the rule does not apply to it by statute; an executive order can bring a day within the pay and leave statutes, as Section 3 of the quoted orders did.
If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).) If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See Section 3(a) of Executive Order 11582, February 11, 1971.)

Private employers and holiday pay
Federal holiday law covers federal employees, and the day after Christmas is not on its list. Whether a private employer gives the day after Christmas off or pays for it is generally a matter of agreement. The U.S. Department of Labor says this about holiday pay, and about government contracts:
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise). These benefits are generally a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee (or the employee's representative).
On a government contract to which the labor standards of the McNamara O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA) apply, holiday and/or vacation fringe benefit requirements are stated in the SCA wage determinations in contracts that exceed $2,500. On a government contract to which the labor standards of the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts apply, holiday pay and/or vacation pay is required for specific classifications of workers only if the Davis-Bacon wage determination in the covered contract specifies such requirements for workers employed in those classifications.
Federal premium pay for holiday work, quoted below, applies to work on a holiday designated by Federal statute, Executive order, or (for District of Columbia government employees) by order of the District of Columbia Council. The day after Christmas is not in 6103(a) or OPM's tables. In the years an order closed agencies on December 26, Section 3 of that order brought the day within the scope of 5 U.S.C. 5546 and 6103(b) for pay and leave (quoted above). Our search on November 1, 2026 found no order for Saturday, December 26, 2026; ask your HR office which pay rules apply to your schedule.
(b) An employee who performs work on a holiday designated by Federal statute, Executive order, or with respect to an employee of the government of the District of Columbia, by order of the District of Columbia Council, is entitled to pay at the rate of his basic pay, plus premium pay at a rate equal to the rate of his basic pay, for that holiday work which is not— (1) in excess of 8 hours; or (2) overtime work as defined by section 5542(a) of this title.

Questions
Do federal employees get the day after Christmas off?
Not by statute. 5 U.S.C. 6103(a) does not list the day after Christmas and OPM's holiday tables have no row for it. By executive order, in some years: when we searched the Federal Register on November 1, 2026, orders had closed executive departments and agencies on Friday, December 26 in 1997, 2003, 2008 and 2014, and on December 24 and December 26 in 2025. The same search found no order for Saturday, December 26, 2026. Ask your agency about your own schedule and leave.
Is the post office open on the day after Christmas 2026?
Regular delivery runs on Saturday; Post Office hours vary. USPS says: “Regular mail delivery occurs Monday through Saturday, with the exception of postal holidays.” Saturday hours vary by location. Confirm local Post Office hours with USPS.
Is the stock market open on the day after Christmas 2026?
The day after Christmas 2026 is a Saturday. Saturday, December 26, 2026 falls on a weekend; NYSE's holiday list has no entry for it. This page covers NYSE; check your exchange or broker for its own calendar. Saturday, December 26, 2026 falls on a weekend; SIFMA's U.S. holiday schedule has no entry for it.
Are Federal Reserve Banks closed on the day after Christmas 2026?
Saturday, December 26, 2026 falls on a weekend. Neither the Federal Reserve Financial Services holiday schedule nor the Board's K.8 table lists a holiday on it. Whether a bank or credit union branch is open is up to each bank: each bank sets its own hours, so check with yours.
Do private employers have to give the day after Christmas off?
Not under federal law for most private employers. Federal holidays bind federal employees, not private employers. The Department of Labor says: "The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise)." On government contracts the rules can differ, and DOL says: "On a government contract to which the labor standards of the McNamara O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA) apply, holiday and/or vacation fringe benefit requirements are stated in the SCA wage determinations in contracts that exceed $2,500." The Davis-Bacon and Related Acts can require holiday pay the same way, for specific classifications of workers and only if the wage determination specifies it. Check your employer and state law.
Has a President closed federal offices on the day after Christmas before?
Yes. When we searched the Federal Register on November 1, 2026 for the exact phrase “December 26”, executive orders closed executive departments and agencies on Friday, December 26 in 1997, 2003, 2008 and 2014, and on December 24 and December 26 in 2025. None of them named December 26, 2026, a Saturday. Each order let agency heads keep certain offices open for the reasons its Section 2 states.
Do federal employees get extra pay for working on the day after Christmas?
Not by statute, and our November 1, 2026 search found no order for Saturday, December 26, 2026. 5 U.S.C. 5546(b) applies to work on a holiday designated by Federal statute, Executive order, or (for District of Columbia government employees) by order of the District of Columbia Council. In the years an order closed agencies on December 26, Section 3 of the order (for example Executive Order 13682 for 2014) said that day “shall be considered as falling within the scope of Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971, and of 5 U.S.C. 5546 and 6103(b) and other similar statutes insofar as they relate to the pay and leave of employees of the United States.” Your agency and pay system decide how pay rules apply to your schedule, so ask your HR office.
