How is NYC income tax calculated here?
The calculator applies the New York City resident rates to your New York State taxable income, the way the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance IT-2105 instructions set them out, and spreads the year’s tax across your paychecks.
What if I work in New York City but live somewhere else?
The calculator models New York City resident income tax only, so it applies if you live in the city. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance says in its Form IT-201 instructions that if you maintained living quarters in New York City and spent 184 days or more there, "you may be considered a resident for New York City income tax purposes" and that "The determination of residency is based on the facts and circumstances of your own situation." If you meet the definition, you complete the New York City resident tax lines; the line for the city tax is labeled "NYC full-year residents only". Someone who lives outside the city and does not meet that definition does not complete those lines, but check with the Department for your own case.
How much will I take home on a $45,000 or $100,000 salary in NYC?
For a single New York City resident paid biweekly, the estimate is about $1,345.90 per paycheck on $45,000 and about $2,710.28 on $100,000.
Are Social Security and Medicare taxes different in New York City?
Social Security and Medicare tax are federal, so they work the same in every state. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, and Medicare is 1.45% of all wages. An employer withholds an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 in a calendar year, without regard to filing status; the tax itself is figured against $250,000 for married filing jointly and $200,000 for other filers.
Sources and limitations
What this calculator leaves out:
- It uses the 2026 federal standard deduction only. It does not model itemized deductions.
- It has no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions, health insurance premiums or HSA contributions, and no dependents or tax credits.
- It includes New York Paid Family Leave (employee), but no other state payroll premium and no city, county or school-district income tax that this page does not list.
- It estimates the year’s tax and spreads it evenly across your paychecks, so your employer’s withholding tables can give a different amount on any single paycheck.
- It assumes you live and work in the same state.
- It is an estimate for planning, not tax advice. Your actual take-home pay depends on your Form W-4 and your employer’s payroll setup.
