How this calculator works
The volume is length times width times depth, with depth converted from inches to feet. It is shown in cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters.
Waste is applied to the calculated volume. Bag count uses the entered bag volume and rounds up because material is purchased in whole bags.
The tool compares the entered bag price against bulk cubic-yard pricing plus delivery. It does not assume a standard bag volume or a universal delivery price.
Worked example
A 10 ft × 12 ft bed at 4 in deep needs 40.00 cu ft, or 1.481 cu yd, before waste. In 2 cu ft bags, that is 20 bags before any waste allowance.
Common questions
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
Does this tell me the right mulch depth?
It calculates the depth you enter. Plant, soil, and mulch type affect an appropriate depth, so use local horticultural guidance for that decision.
