Frequently asked questions

Which of these cities has the highest minimum wage in 2026?

Seattle has the highest general rate among the 25 localities listed here, $21.30 per hour as of October 30, 2026. Hotel workers have separate, higher rates in some places: Los Angeles, citywide hotel workers (cash wage, plus a health benefit payment): $25.00; Oakland, hotel workers without health benefits (Measure Z): $25.14; Santa Monica, hotel workers and businesses operating on hotel property: $25.00.

Do cities and counties set a minimum wage above the state rate?

Yes, where state law allows it. Each locality listed here is above its statewide base rate, except Albuquerque, which is level with it today and scheduled to move above it in 2027. In New York City and the Portland metro area the higher rate is set by state law for the region rather than by the city. When more than one minimum applies, the employer must pay the highest one, and the federal minimum is $7.25.

Which of these local minimum wages are scheduled to change in 2027?

Seattle, Denver, San Jose, Flagstaff, San Diego, Minneapolis, Santa Fe, NM, Albuquerque, Boulder, West Hollywood, Sunnyvale, Saint Paul, SeaTac have a 2027 rate that the official source states. New York City will not change on January 1, 2027, according to the state labor department. Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, OR, Montgomery County, MD, Berkeley, Oakland, Cook County, IL, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Mountain View have not announced a 2027 rate yet, so no 2027 figure is shown for them.

How do I find the right rate if my job is near a city line?

Use the city or county labor office tool. Seattle's labor office links a King County map and Washington State's Labor and Industries site lists local rates, and Oregon publishes an interactive map for its urban growth boundary. Hours worked outside the city are generally not covered by the city rate, and several cities set an hours threshold for coverage, as each locality page explains.

Does the tip credit apply in these cities?

It depends on the place. A tip credit lets an employer pay tipped workers a lower cash wage when tips make up the difference. It is allowed, with limits, in New York City (hospitality only), Chicago, Denver (food and beverage only), Montgomery County, MD, Santa Fe, NM, Albuquerque, Boulder (food and beverage only), Cook County, IL. In Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose, Portland, OR, Flagstaff, San Diego, Minneapolis, Berkeley, Oakland, Pasadena, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Saint Paul, SeaTac tips do not count toward the minimum wage (California, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington law bar a tip credit, and the cities listed here that set their own rule say the same). Each locality page lists the cash wage and the official wording.

Not legal advice. This page covers the general hourly minimum for most adult, non-tipped employees. Tipped, youth, training, student, agricultural, small-employer and industry-specific wages follow different rules. Employers must pay the highest rate that applies, whether it is federal, state or local. Confirm your rate with your state labor agency or the U.S. Department of Labor.
